Dilation drops cause enlargement of the pupil and allow for a better view of the "back of the eye" (retina and optic nerve) as well as a check for glasses in younger patients. They also blur vision, especially at near, and make the patient more sensitive to light while the eyes are dilated.
As part of a complete eye exam, most new patients and some established patients receive dilating eye drops. It is not recommended that teenagers drive after being dilated. Many adults also prefer to have a driver following dilation.
It is usual for drops given to adults to last approximately 2 to 4 hours following administration. Younger children receive an additional eye drop to aid in cycloplegia (allows for better check for glasses), and their drops typically last approximately 4 to 6 hours after installation. We allow around 45 minutes for children’s eye drops to work prior to the dilated examination for adequate cycloplegia.
Some individuals may have prolonged dilation following drops. Please let us know if this occurs, and we will note it in the patient's chart.
